should my family be offended by the word "redneck" showing up in a tv wordgame we play?
May 12th, 2010 | by admin |yesterday my wife, 14 year old daughter and i were playing a game called "word crunch" on our direct tv…it is a channel with games that you get for an extra charge per month…well, on of the words that we figured out was "REDNECK"…is this not a racial slur against white people?…should not white people be offended by that showing up on a game being played?…if the "N" word showed up or any other slur at any other race was on that game, you can bet it would have been in the news already and there would be a law suit…why is it that white people can be called names and made fun of, but no other races can?…i was joking when the word came up that "we should call a white al sharpton and a white jesse jackson and file a law suit!"…i don’t feel as if i am rascist at all and i would never call someone by a derogatory name, why should my family and i be subject to this…i am going to file a complaint with direct tv…wonder if i would be taken as seriously being a white person than if i was a person of color making a complaint of a racial slur?…
can a white person sue for a racial slur made and be taken seriously?…
My, my. So we’re not sensitive enough – yet?
It’s a term referring to a certain type of knuckle-dragging Caucasian, while the N word referrs to ALL Negroes.
Oops! Am I not supposed to use the term, ‘Negro’ either?

Well, the thing is, redneck isn’t a racial slur. It’s more of a regional derogatory word. I’m from New Jersey, and if any white person was called a redneck around here, it wouldn’t faze them at all. If I recall correctly, redneck is a derogatory term for Southern white Americans.

According to my dictionary, redneck is informal derogatory for a working class white man, typically in rural regions.
However, from what I’ve seen in TV and amongst my friends, redneck has become a more generic term and isn’t usually considered offensive unless it is PURPOSEFULLY being used to offend someone.
The N word I see also being used casually, HOWEVER, I only see the N word used casually amongst black people themselves. The N word is a more serious racial slur

It’s a politically correct term for some reason to call southern whites. It’s racist and should be in the same class as any other term used toward a class of people. It’s sickening that this term is used so much. Whites are open game for abuse for some reason.
Tina if he should get thicker skin then so should everyone else.
